Visionaries

The BBC has a television programme and ongoing online debate called Visionaries. In theprogramme, the case is argued for why one of two visionaries is or was the greatest. Mozart is compared to Madonna. Da Vinci comes up against Andy Warhol. Dickens challenges that woman who wrote those stories about that boy who becomes a wizard...
See what you think.

ELFIC

Next time you're around Cedofeita, take the time to check out this new shop in Centro Comercial Cedofeita. It's hidden at the back of the shopping centre, but if you believe in fairies and elves, or like clothes with a medieval look, it's well worth a visit. And if you don't believe in fairies or elves, and don't think you like clothes with a medieval look, why not go and let yourself be persuaded to change your mind?

Stuck in Customs

There are some wonderful photos on the Stuck in Customs page. The photographer uses very high contrast to make the photos look more like what we actually see in real life.

The photos are very big, so be prepared to wait a bit for the full page to download if you haven't got a very fast internet connection. Worth the wait, though.

Enjoy!

Aung San Suu Kyi

Some weeks ago, I sent round a link to Aung San Suu Kyi’s ‘Letters from Burma ’. (Also here in one file for easy downloading). Anyone who has read even some of them will find this website, campaigning for her 12-year detention to be ended, of interest.

Gapfillers

Some nice activities and things on Gapfillers. Their 'Word of the Day' feature is quite nice, though I recommend you cross-check the definitions given and the usage of words that appear. Remember Sara is very good for this. Worth taking a look, even so.

Roma

Porto and Rome have been in touch again. Look at the latest work to go on the Rome Metrozine, including links to the Porto Summer Trip Blog, and work by young learners here.

CUBED

Take a look at the new 'Green' edition of the British Council's Science e-zine Cubed, and find out about Sonic Stoves, Eco-Cars, and 3-D Archaeology!

Back to School!

No, this isn't an ad for Continente (or was it Carrefour?) - it's just a welcome back post! Hope everyone had a good summer. I spent a week in Bilbao, a week on the coast near S Pedro de Moel, and some days in the Alentejo.

Back at work, the summer 'obras' are still going on. On the teachers' floor we're working amongst boxes; on the ground floor, the new reception area is still being finished, so registry is temporarily in the old computer room. But everything's running pretty smoothly.

Don't forget to post thoughts, ideas, summer stories on the
British Council Hub!

Hope to see everyone back at the British Council soon!

Best wishes for a new academic year.
