Formal Letters

Anyone wanting a little help with writing formal letters, take a look at this linK:

At the risk of getting into an online revision lesson, remember, the basic outline of a formal letter is:

i) Introduction - why are you writing the letter.

ii) Body - the main text of the letter. At FCE level, typically divided into two paragraphs, eg (a) What makes you a suitable person for the job (b) Why do you want the job or (a) What went wrong (b) What would you like to be done about it.

iii) Ending. Sometimes this will include an ACTION point, eg 'I look forward to receiving your brochure soon' or 'I will telephone to confirm receipt of my letter next week.' It may also include a reinforcement of the main message you wish to convey, eg in a letter of apology, 'Once again, please accept our deepest apologies for the misunderstanding.'

That's a very quick rough guide to give you a little help.

Learning

"It is not by the accumulation of memorised facts, but by a constant and truly deep and incisive questioning of life and everything around us that true learning is acheived."

Tetanus

After my recent fight with a roadsign, and my subsequent need for a tetanus jab, one or two of you wanted to read the side-effects of the vaccine. Here's a good link:

For the record, I felt fluey, tired, had soreness around the injection area, and was very irritable for a few days (but tried not to show it in class). Contrary to rumour, I did not cry uncontrollably for 3 hours.
